Quote taken from my weekly email from illustrationfriday.com:
“Beauty: the adjustment of all parts proportionately so that one cannot add or subtract or change without impairing the harmony of the whole” - Leon Batista Alberti
With my ever growing desire to create art that is more beautiful than anything else lately, is this quote true? I don't know. I think it's true for some things, but not for all. There is "beauty" in a great many things. There are so many opinions on what is beautiful, which leads to another well known quote:
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
I personally agree with these next two quotes in that beauty is much more felt than seen. So what kind of art can I create with that kind of beauty? Here are the quotes:
Beauty is an experience, nothing else. It is not a fixed pattern or an arrangement of features. It is something felt, a glow or a communicated sense of fineness.
-D. H. Lawrence
Beauty of whatever kind, in its supreme development, invariably excites the sensitive soul to tears.
-Edgar Allen Poe
There lies my tie to my art and music. My favorite music is the kind that reaches beyond pure shallow enjoyment and into something that I can't explain. Is it even possible for me to create art that does the same? I think it is, but I haven't quite figured it out yet. So I am back to square one, but have at least gone full circle on the subject of beauty. I don't know what it is to everyone, but I have an idea of what it feels like for me. Now to express what that feeling looks like. Wish me well.
